President Obama must be thinking it is time to go to Vegas and bet the farm. The Republicans, in hyper-self-destruct mode may end up with a nominee, Rick Santorum, who has warned of “the dangers of contraception in this country.” He said: “It’s not OK because it’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”
This requires some cheek on Mr. Santorum’s part after all, he famously said of the President: “He thinks he knows better how to run your lives.”
Obama may not be a .300 average hitter, but he’ll knock this softball out of the park if and when they get to debate.
Amazingly many Republicans, rather than backing Romney, are running toward Santorum. Senators Scott Brown and Roy Blunt co-sponsored a health care bill this week allowing any employer with a “moral conviction” (a term left undefined in the legislation) to deny access to any health service, including contraception. Echoing yesterday’s post title of What Can go Wrong Here?, this would mean that our high-minded CEOs, all of whom indubitably have “moral, and in a few cases criminal, conviction”, could deny coverage for anything, i.e., they might argue that if God wanted us to not die of a heart attack, he would have given us a stronger heart – the possibilities for reining in the cost of health care in this country are endless.
