RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Canadian Governor General, His Excellency David Johnston, arrived in Rio Wednesday following his meeting with President Rousseff in Brasilia Tuesday.  Johnston spoke to a full crowd at Gavea-Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) Wednesday morning, delivering a speech focused on increased cooperation between Canada and Brazil.

The speech focused on the recent announcement that Canada will welcome 12,000 Brazilian studentsto Canadian universities in participation with Rousseff’s Science Without Borders program.

This exchange is hoped to further what Johnston referred to as the “Diplomacy of Knowledge,” an objective Johnston said is achievable through “collaboration, cooperation, and communication.”

During his message Johnston reiterated a point first raised during his talk with Rousseff, “the world needs Brazil to be successful.”  Johnston spoke of Canada’s commitment to helping Brazil achieve this success, including the country’s sharing best-practices from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver to celebrating Brazil’s strides in successful social programs, notably Bolsa Família and Mulheres Mil (“Empower 1000 Women”).
