In the United States, Gold Star Family Members are people who have lost a son or daughter who served in its military.
I was shopping earlier today and wearing my Air Force Veteran hat. One of the the sales ladies, seeing my hat, told me she enjoyed speaking with veterans since she was a Gold Star Mother. I asked what had happened to her soldier.
She told me he had recently been killed in Afghanistan. I knew she wanted to talk and spoke with her for about 20 minutes. Remembering my Father who was killed at Bastogne on January 9, 1945, I nearly shed tears with her.

These images show the American Cemetery at Foy in Belgium which contains the remains of 19,000 American Army members who died during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944-45. Included are those of my Father Richard J. Hughes who was a member of E Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne which comprised the Band of Brothers made famous by Stephen E Ambrose who wrote the book which was later made into a mini series now available on HBO Max.
